Word on the Sphere: November 2

This week we found fabulous must-have accessories to pump up your fashionista stature and turn others green with envy:
fingerless-gloves.jpg

Splendora warms us with Zero + Maria Cornejo Fingerless Gloves as a fashionable accessory to keep you toasty through the fall and winter months. Fingerless gloves aren’t just for post-pubescent hipsters or angsty pop stars like Avril Lavigne. Chilean designer Maria Cornejo used sumptuous cotton cashmere for her take on the style. The gloves extend to the elbows, allowing them to be scrunched to create different looks and warm your arms as needed.

FabSugar highlights these L’Agenda Moderne colorful leather business card holders. They’re cute and perfect to slip into your bag — just in case you meet someone worth seeing again. These colors will brighten up your day and will really pop during the upcoming gray and white months.
ahoy-handbag.jpg

Delight enjoys the Ahoy Canvas Swallow Tote and tells us that birds are ‘in’ everywhere; on plates, t-shirts, pillows, and more. The same can be said of the nautical theme, so here are the two trends combined into one classically adorable bag. This durable, lined canvas tote will take you through fall into winter with style and a bit of sass. Not a detail was left off this bag – a sweet combo of appliqué and embroidery is topped off with a satin sash that gives it a little something for everyone.

SheFinds brags about the Botkier Bianca Satchel as a must-have for this season. Spotted on the arms of celebs like Jennifer Garner and Lindsay Lohan, a Botkier has become one of the most coveted bags around. The Bianca comes in soft lambskin leather with polished brass hardware and easily accessible zip pockets on the outside. Due to its high demand, however, retailers report that the stylish sacks sell so quickly they can hardly keep them in stock.

Stylehive reminds us of Diane Keaton‘s character Annie Hall, and the borrowed-from-the-boys approach to dressing. Tailored vests, wide-legged pants and the classic button-down shirt look effortless, and can be dressed up with accessories, like a sophisticated hat, a striped scarf, or trendy oxfords. This look is best when you mix in one feminine element, like a tweed mini skirt, or a billowy white shirt to balance out the masculine pieces.

Accentuate

“The impulse and will to carry through an unorthodox style are no casual matter.”
Kennedy Fraser, b. 1946

At this point, you’ve probably seen all the press about sequins, feathers and satin being big, big, big this season. And you’ve probably thought, “If only I was a Rockette/Vegas showgirl/caberet singer…then I could wear that to work.” The good news is, you don’t have to quit your day job to work these trends into your regular wardrobe. The key is using them as accent pieces with what you already own and wear. Think of them like glitter- a little goes a long way and too much will haunt you for years.

INC Sequin Racerback Tank at Macy'sSequins

A sequin trimmed tank can be worn with jeans on Saturday night, and under a suit during the week. Look for tone-on-tone (black sequins on a black top, silver on grey, etc.) to keep it work appropriate.

Kate Spade Karolina Black Satin Heels at Jildor ShoesSatin

I know it’s hard to think of satin and not imagine high school proms and bridesmaid dresses. Which is precisely why you aren’t wearing a satin dress to the office. But, satin heels- in a heart beat! Swap out your black leather or suede with a pair of conservative satin heels.

Peacock Feather Earrings at FredFlare.comFeathers

Jewelry is the easiest way to incorporate feathers into your wardrobe. Peacock feather earrings are large and light so they won’t stretch your lobes. Street vendors are an excellent bet for finding cool ones on the cheap.

Word on the Sphere: October 5

This week we’re thinking pink as we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Here are some ways for you to help support the cause and show you care: sports-bra.jpg

croc-clutch.jpg
FitSugar gets excited about this Pink Ribbon Sports Bra as an October must-have. You can support your gals, while supporting wider access to mammograms. The Breast Cancer Site will cover one percent of a mammogram for every bra purchased. While that might not seem like a lot, those percentage points add up!

pink-bling.jpg
Splendora shouts to all of us bagistas about the “Shop pink” mantra and Rebecca Minkoff’s pink croc patent leather clutch to help support Breast Cancer awareness, research and survivors. I always knew that shopping could be wonderful and beneficial for everyone!

flip-flop.jpg
FabSugar drools over Breast Cancer Awareness Bling and Mauri Pioppo Sundari Necklace. Treat yourself to some adorable pink rocks for the cause. In addition to the myriad BCA cosmetics and makeup offerings, a number of companies have come out with cute jewelry and other accessories that contribute a hefty chunk.

dont-duck-a-breast-exam.gifStyleHive boasts about Privo’s limited edition ‘Ribbon’ flip flop, dedicated to finding a cure for Breast Cancer. $2 from each pair sold will be donated by Privo to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The upper straps feature the universal ribbon emblem in full grain leather. The billowy, synthetic wool lining offers added comfort and delicate femininity. The footbed border and embossed outsole feature the BCRF’s commitment to ’stepping toward a cure’. The EVA midsole gives you added cushioning with lightweight support.

eBay Giving Works hosts loads of charity auctions benefiting the cause. For example, Munchkin, Inc. has enlisted the support of a diverse group of celebrities to sign and decorate Munchkin’s limited edition pink bath ducks scheduled for auction in October. All auction proceeds will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

This week we found funky fresh, fun accessories that will soon become favorites:
glowing-clutch.pngplaid-pantys.jpgpill-paks.png

SheFinds glows over the Light-up Designer Handbags from Solas Fashion. This is an innovative brand that fuses style with function, brings you clutches, totes, satchels and more, all crafted with their unique lighting system. The built-in blue light that lines the edge of the purse opening offers just enough illumination so you can find what you need without a hassle. Open it and it lights up. Close it and the light goes off.

FabSugar goes wild over Steve Alan’s Tartan Ruffled Panty. Why wear blah underwear when there are so many interesting choices out there? This item is seriously fabworthy and a fun undergarment to spruce up the underside of your outfit.

Shiny Shiny brags about the new Pill Paks makeover and its clever alarm system for your meds. They’ve even taken it a step further and have created them in a range of colors. Instead of dull hospital style white, you can choose from leopard print, zebra stripe and the good old stars and stripes to safeguard your contraceptives. Check out the hugs and kisses case — love those lips.

Splendora boasts about Oliver Peoples Harper Eyeglasses as a great accessory to complete your look. Thick, bold, exaggerated eyeglass styles are the in-thing. The ’50s-inspired Harper model from Oliver Peoples is a more subtle take on the trend, but your local lens ‘n frames store will have a bevy of cool ones to choose from. Be proud of your optical deficiency!

Delight spotlights the season of nautical accessories that bring crisp whites and fun kitschy trinkets to fall when most colors are drab and jewelry heavy. Rachel Leigh’s Enameled Anchor Necklace is simple, chic and will be a pretty piece for everyday, or a fun addition to a special outfit. Rachel Leigh’s jewelry has been featured in Lucky, Allure, People Magazine, Elle, OK!, InTouch, Seventeen, WWWD and many other stylish publications. This is the perfect gift for girlfriends and trendsetters!

Excessorize

“Not on one strand are all life’s jewels strung.”
William Morris, 1834 - 1896

We’ve all heard repeatedly how less is more. We’ve seen all the design tributes to minimalism and appreciated the starkness of modern design. And if we’re drinking martinis, I’m all for moderation. But let’s be honest- sometimes more is more. Here a few things that always make me think, “If one is good, a dozen is fantastic.”

Kenneth Jay Lane PearlsRoping

One strand is prim, preppy and can be a bit stuffy. Ropes of pearls are urban (think Like a Virgin era Madonna) and decadent (think Coco Chanel). Try mixing your grandmother’s strand with a costume opera length necklace.

Silver BanglesJingling

A lone bangle looks lonely, but a stack of bangles looks like a party. They shimmy, they jingle, they will make you smile. Check out Indian bazaars and Mediterranean markets for inexpensive options.

Netaya 14k Gold Hanging NecklaceChaining

A single chain necklace is New Jersey. Multiple chains are Parisian. Avoid looking like Mr. T by keeping the rest of your jewelry simple and understated.

cocktail-ring-2.jpggold-clutch.jpgcocktail-ring.jpgplum-purse.jpgThis week we found amazing accessories to accent any outfit, whether fancy or casual. Glitzy, glamorous, oversized and purple have surfaced as accessory trends to be aware of this summer:

SheFinds seeks out the hottest new accessory and trend — drumroll please — the Cocktail Ring! It’s back, it’s beautiful and most of all it’s chic. These rings were first popularized in the ’40s and ’50s, but the oversize styling and glitz have made a comeback and the bigger, the better.

FabSugar raves about Devi Kroell’s Gold Clutch, for any fancy-schmancy party! Summer is full of soirees so finding one shouldn’t be a problem. The faux snakeskin on this clutch doesn’t scream “fake” or “cheap.” The thin chain strap can be hidden in the bag or can be worn around the shoulder, depending on what look you want.

Splendora
oozes about Kym Gold-Lubell’s new line of “cocktail rings” as the epitome of bohemian chic for fall. The line called BabaKul, which is French for hippie, is hand-made and combines precious metals with oversized healing stones in designs inspired by flower power.

StyleHive
is buzzing about purple and plum as this season’s must-have color for purses and handbags. Plum is versatile — it goes with both cool and warm toned accessories and jewelry and is just dark enough to make it low-maintenance. From chic little clutches to big slouchy totes, plum purses have never been sweeter than this summer.

Bag Spotting: Hunt for the Perfect Totes

Anyone who knows me, knows that I’ve never met a bag I didn’t like.  However, each one quickly gets upgraded by the next find.  Sound familiar?  Well, I’d like to share some of my recent picks with the rest of you bagaholics.

Timbuk2 Cargo Tote Large Lavender OliveBest Big Gym Bag:  Timbuk2 Large Cargo Tote ($70)

I saw someone with this bag in the gym locker room last week and had to have it.  This is a great gym bag because it is really roomy.  I workout in the morning so it’s important that it fits everything I’ll need to get ready for the day.  This holds everything with room to spare!  I’m talking about work clothes, a jacket (because it is always cold in SF), dress shoes and shower shoes, tons of get-ready products, my latest chick-lit and gadgets like an iPod and heart-rate monitor.  Inside it is primarily one large compartment with a water bottle net, large side pocket and an organizer flap.

Sally Spicer ToteBest Stylish Carryall:  Sally Spicer Tote ($63)

I first spotted this bag at a trunk show which kicked off a hunt for my favorite pattern…I utimately chose a beautiful deep purple with dragonflies.  This stylish everyday tote is perfect for anyone who needs to carry things around with them, even groceries.  Also, don’t be afraid of the larger diaper bag version, it doesn’t look like one.  I use it when I’m bringing things into work or spending time anywhere (like the four hours it takes to get a cut and color).  It’s nice to have necessities handy for multi-tasking.

Solo Computer ToteBest Two-in-One Bargain Bag for Business Travel:  Solo Tote ($31-$54)

One of the business consultants at my office has a Solo tote bag; I’ll be purchasing one this week.  Most laptop bags aren’t something you’d carry to dinner, but when traveling you don’t always make it back to the hotel.  So, it’s always nice to have one that can double as a purse.  My favorite features are the splash of color, light weight, and zipper closure.  This certainly tops my pricey heavy leather bag that doesn’t zip, causing items to fall out at airport security or on the plane.  Similar versions of this tote are available in polyvinyl or nylon and you
can get different colors on the inside.

Happy hunting!  I’d love to hear about your favorites.

The Runway Scoop promotes the quintessential fashion accessory — pearl necklaces. If you don’t have one, this is a must-add item to your jewelry collection. In fact, pearls are among the oldest gems in the world and were worn by Middle Eastern and Asian societies going back as far as 3500 B.C.

StyleHive raps about this gold-filled chain and gold-plated sneaker charms necklace from hip-hop handmade maven Lady Lesiure. Throw these around your neck, and tie once for a fun and casual look.
