Freedom Writers

Academy Award winner Hilary Swank stars as Erin Gruwell, a fish out of water teacher challenged by students of many different ethnicities who don’t like her because of her skin color. She must gain their respect through her teachings. The movie is inspired by a book called The Freedom Writers Diary by Erin Gruwell and the kids of Wilson High. The DVD comes out only three months after it’s theatrical release.

Smokin’ Aces

Smokin’ Aces features an all star cast of actors (Ben Affleck, Ray Liotta, and Andy Garcia), but it’s Jeremy Piven and Ryan Reynolds who are the leads. The rated R film about a magician (Piven) turned Mafia informant and the FBI agent ordered to protect him (Reynolds) also features the film debuts of music stars Alicia Keys and Common.

The Last King of Scotland

Forrest Whittaker’s role as an Ugandan dictator won him the 2007 Best Actor Award at the Academy Awards. The film is loosely based on the Giles Foden’s debut novel of the same name. Directed by Kevin MacDonald, the film features James McAvoy as a Scottish doctor who is befriended by Whittaker’s Idi Amin and sees the dictator’s moral corruption first hand and has to find his way out of their relationship.

This is the second film based on E. B. White’s children’s book. Dakota Fanning stars and is joined by the voices of Julia Roberts, Oprah Winfrey, Robert Redford and many other big stars. It’s a mix of live action and computer animation and is directed by Gary Winick.

Top DVD Movie Releases For March 27, 2007

DVD fans know that on every Tuesday, the newest DVD’s are released to retailers everywhere. Here are the top three full length films released to DVD today with reviews from members of the Epinions.com community.

Happy Feet

The animated film about the plight of an alienated dancing penguin named Mumble made nearly $200 million in US box office during it’s theatrical release. Star quality vocal work done by heavy Hollywood hitters like Robin Williams, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, and Elijah Wood, helped the George Millar directed Happy Feet win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. This DVD release also features two new animated shorts.

The Pursuit Of Happyness

Set in San Francisco, Will Smith plays Chris Gardner, a man who doesn’t allow a myriad of road blocks deter him from his goal of supporting his family. The story is based on the real life of Gardner and garnered Will Smith an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. It also features Smith’s son, Jaden Christopher Syre Smith. Audio commentary by director Gabriele Muccino is a bonus extra on the DVD release.
