Listen Up! Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black

I’d rather be at home with Ray (Charles)
I ain’t got seventy days
‘Cause there’s nothing you can teach me
That I can’t learn from Mr. Hathaway (Donny)

Amy Winehouse - Rehab

Amy Winehouse’s 2006 UK release Back To Black (released in the US in early 2007) has put the North London songstress on the map in North America. After 2003’s debut Frank, Winehouse disappeared for a bit, only to reappear with what many on Epinions are hailing as one of the best releases of the year. Winehouse’s soulful throwback vocals channel old era singers and the Motown-like sound is handled by producers Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, more known for their hip hop workings.

Reviewer Cletta1201 describes Winehouse as a once in a lifetime artist. She says, “Once in a great while an artist comes along that makes you sit up and listen. And not a tap your foot, nod your head listen to some flash in the pan artist who’s destined for obscurity - but something that stirs the soul a little and makes you happy that music is capable of evoking such sentiment.. Chiliqueen adds, If you love 1960s soul, Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” feels like a long-lost friend.

Winehouse’s honest and at times, jaw dropping lyrics try to steal the show, but you can’t mistake that voice for anything other than one of the more powerful instruments in music today. The production by Remi and Ronson also compliments her raw talents so well. Kookytree says that with the title track (Back To Black), you have “a song dripping with menace” and “you won’t hear a finer single in 2007″. Producer Mark Ronson excels himself with an opulent pallet of sound, incorporating ethereal choirs of ooing Amys, sinister touches of spaghetti western guitar and what sounds like a full orchestra, whilst maintaining an elegant control.

Speeddemon531 loves the “swelling melody” on Tears Dry On Their Own. He adds, “Using a tasty sample of Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, Winehouse creates a triumphant breakup anthem that you just have to sing along to.

With six reviews on Epinions, Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black achieves a 5 star rating.

Listen Up! Ne-Yo’s Because Of You

Ne-Yo, the 25-year old pop star from Las Vegas, Nevada has created quite a legacy for himself in such a short time in the music industry. As a singer, he’s been nominated for a Grammy award for his rookie album In My Own Words which is now double platinum. As a song writer, he’s written songs for the likes of Chris Brown, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and has supposedly written a song for the Britney Spears comeback album. With his second album, Because Of You, he’s established himself as no one hit wonder. According to Billboard.com, the album opened up at number 1 on the Billboard 200 selling just over 250,000 copies, besting jazz singer Michael Buble’s Call Me Irresponsible.

Epinions reviewer Speeddemon531 gives the album 4 out of a possible 5 stars, but says it’s not too different from his first album and he doesn’t stray from the template that made him successful.

Speeddemon531 says:

The fact that Ne-Yo doesn’t stray far from the template that made his first album a success turns out to be both a good and a bad thing. On the one hand, it’s nice to hear that Ne-Yo hasn’t lost his gift for melody and that his voice is still supple and boyish in a way that STRONGLY recalls Michael Jackson circa 1980. On the other hand, “Because Of You” occasionally feels like a retread, or at the very least it sounds like Ne-Yo’s playing it safe and not challenging himself very much.

He also says that Ne-Yo’s influences are very transparent and that the album is a near “Michael Jackson tribute album”. The album was released to the stores on May 1, 2007. You can buy it on Shopping.com.

American Idol - It’s About The Music

If you thought Sanjaya was on “fiyah” or were on the other side and wished that his clothes caught on fire, at least you were watching American Idol. And while the hard smiling youngster isn’t on the show anymore (he was the sixth contestant eliminated), Idol is still the most popular show week in and week out according to the television ratings.

But what about the music? Isn’t about the music? Thanks to Epinions Music Reviewers, I’ve listed the latest in American Idol music releases for you.

Elliot Yamin - Elliot Yamin

Elliot Yamin was in the final three of last season’s show, losing only to runner up Katharine McPhee and winner Taylor Hicks. He was a fan favorite and was one of the better vocalists in the history of the show. Epinions reviewer MattBjorke calls Elliot Yamin’s self titled album on independant label Hickory Records (which is distributed by Sony BMG’s Red Distribution), “A solid debut album which has plenty to like on it.” Elliot’s first single is Wait For You.

Ruben Studdard - The Return

Ruben Studdard’s third solo album (he released a gospel album as his sophomore album) was supposed to be a return to what made him so good on the second season of American Idol when Gladys Knight called him the Velvet Teddy Bear. It is in fact, not that at all according to Epinions member roheblius who says that Studdard needs (to sing) smart ballads that cater to his cuddly, charming, shy, nice guy image that he sold so well on American Idol. Thus far, Studdard’s album isn’t exactly selling off the shelves, making it a far cry from his first album that went platinum.

Kelly Pickler - Small Town Girl

The bucket of sunshine and a quite polarizing Idol icon, Pickler has turned her short stay on Idol into quite the little career. Her album, Small Town Girl is nearing 500,000 units sold and Epinions reviewer Monnie1976 says “I think it’s great when a singer’s personality shines through the material and you feel like what you are hearing is something they’ve really experienced.” Released on Halloween of last year, the album’s newest single is I Wonder.

Chris Daughtry (his band Daughtry) - DAUGHTRY

It was a surprise last season on American Idol when Chris Daughtry was elminated before making it to the end. Fans had him pegged at least for the final two and the popular choice to win it all. But the joke is really on everyone else. Chris Daughtry (and his band) has one of the surprise albums of the year. It’s certified 2x platinum in just over 5 months after being released. Epinions reviewer Lambchops says the songs are rich with guitars and drums and injected with a good bit of pop. Daughtry’s single Home takes the place of Daniel Powter’s Bad Day as the signature tune played when Idol contestants are sent home.

Taylor Hicks - Taylor Hicks

Last season’s winner, Taylor Hicks has been getting some negative press of late based on an album that has not yet sold a million units, but it doesn’t mean that the album isn’t good. According to Epinions reviewer, tchoate, the album should be able to be appreciated by all the members of the “Soul Patrol”, and she adds that based on the quality of music, Taylor’s fan club should be growing. The album includes a Marvin Gaye cover, a Ray Charles re-working, and the song Dream Myself Awake written by Rob Thomas.

Fantasia - Fantasia

Fantasia’s self-titled sophomore album is urban rock according to her. According to Epinions reviewer speeddemon531, Fantasia has a voice that can move boulders. He also calls Fantasia one of the best female singers of her generation. The album got off to a slow start and hasn’t really picked up from a sales perspective, but with a Broadway career to go along with her music career, we’re going to see a lot of Fantasia.

Katharine McPhee - Katharine McPhee

Katharine McPhee’s often delayed rookie album was a pleasant surprise when it dropped earlier this year. Epinions reviewer kelly617 calls the album a well executed guilty pleasure. McPhee has sort of been out of the Idol limelight of late, but her song Not Ur Girl was used during the presentation of the top 6 girls for this year’s season.

Tonight, American Idol gives back with a two hour special. You can read more about it on the American Idol website.
