Lucited

Lucite is showing up everywhere this season, but there is a bit of confusion about what it actually is. So here’s the skinny: it’s plastic. DuPont invented Lucite in 1931 and started manufacturing everything from airplane windshields to jewelry with it. The plastic is still used for a million things, including accessories. The pieces out right now seem both modern and vintage, and are easy to work into your wardrobe.

Load up Lucite necklaces and wear them with everything from jeans and t-shirts to day dresses at summer weddings. Mix shapes and sizes to capture the eclectic vibe of spring fashion.

It may not always feels like you’re walking on air, but in Lucite heels it will at least look like you are. Combine the Lucite trend with the wedge heel trend to appear twice as stylish with half the purchases.

My problem with most plastic purses is that everyone can see what’s in your bag. If you choose a printed one, your contents are concealed, but you still get the look of the season.

Flat-Footed and Fancy Free

In my mind, it used to be that really great shoes had to have at least a 3-inch heel, so pointy that Sharon Stone might reconsider the ice pick as her weapon of choice. Flats were for beach vacations, rumpled Sunday morning trips to the supermarket. Certainly not for fashion.

Then my mind changed when my job moved me to New York City, a mecca for the style-obsessed. Here, I found what I’d anticipated - sexy city women teetering atop their stiletto towers as they hurried along Fifth Avenue or strolled the West Village. But, I also spotted something shocking - a proliferation of chic flats. Women of all ages and fashion sensibilities are donning flats for their morning commutes, afternoon shop-a-thons and weekend evenings out.

No matter where you live, whether you walk 10 blocks to your destination or 10 feet to get in your car, flats make a fashion statement. No longer frumpy and functional, with creative embellishments, wild fabrics and new shapes, it is the season of the flat! So join your flat-footed sisters and check out some of these must-have styles.

Jazzed Up

“Anyone can make the simple complicated. Creativity is making the complicated simple.”
Charles Mingus, 1922 - 1979

In 1920s joie de vivre met the pursuit of happiness and created a fabulous decade of clothes and music. The saucy independence of flappers was a perfect fit with the new genre of American music: jazz. With the New Orleans Jazz Fest kicking of this weekend, there’s no better time to work some jazz age inspired spring pieces into your wardrobe.

Elegant leisurewear, a.k.a. sportswear, started with the active lifestyle of the 20s. Look for a tennis costume inspired blouse in lightweight cotton or silk to add a dash of Gatsby glamour to your style.

Aerosoles Sweet PartJump

Ferragamo realized in 1925 that by inserting a slim steel shank into the arch, he could design fancier shoes. Pay homage to the birth of the modern pump and put a little Charleston in your step with a pair of T-Strap heels.

Surplice-style dress, Newport NewsFusion

Simple silhouettes in fluid, drapey fabrics defined the Jazz era. You can’t drink bathtub gin (the beverage of flappers) in a stiff dress, so give the hanger a shake. The dress should be able to slink into a speakeasy. Add a belt at your hips to complete the modern flapper look.

Patently Stylish

“What is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.”
Yves Saint Laurent

When I was little, I had black patent leather tap shoes that I loved and wore everywhere. Then I had a couple birthdays and learned that what is charming on a child is not so charming on an adult. Luckily, patent leather is all grown up this season. So take a shine to some patently stylish accessories.

Guess Merri PatentShoe Shine

With everything from scarlet to bottle green to aubergine available this season, there’s no reason to stick with black heels. Keep your patent leather shoes shiny and conditioned by rubbing a little Vaseline into them periodically.

Mobile Edge The LondonIn the Bag

Remember in Funny Face when Kay Thompson’s character pronounces spring fashion is “dull, dreary and depressing,” right before she sings Think Pink? I feel that way about a lot of business bags. But not this time! What could be more fun than a glossy, shiny, sensible patent leather bag for work?

Calvin Klein Patent Leather BeltBelt Line

There are a number of practical reasons to wear belts- accentuate a waist, fake a waist, keep your pants up, etc. They’re also in fashion this season, which is practically a reason to buy a new one. Wear it over dresses and fine knit sweaters, a la Tippi Hedron. Or, pair it with fluid trousers and boots for a modern Katharine Hepburn.

Sweatin’ In Style

While participating in the MS Walk this weekend, I noticed a lot of fashion-focused people running along the waterfront.  If you don’t know San Francisco, there’s a beautiful stretch of park next to the Golden Gate Bridge that attracts picnickers and kite lovers, but definitely runners, walkers, and bikers galore.

Fit Couture Barcelona Yoga CaprisGel Kayano Xi AsicsTech-Enabled T-ShirtCardinals Tank TopBesides the plethora of million-dollar men without shirts (hey, it kept us entertained while we fund-raised), there were a lot of folks in cool gear.  It was inspiring, but let’s face it…sometimes exercising isn’t fun or even something that we want to do, but know we need to.  If you’re like me, you might need incentive to work out: shopping incentive.  One week at the gym equals one new workout outfit.

If you’ve earned some stylish workout wear, here are some suggestions to help you gear up while sweating to your favorite tunes.

These Fit Couture Barcelona drawstring capris pants are a hot item that many women are wearing, especially since they are versatile enough for a hike or just hanging out.

Good athletic shoes are essential and there are many different kinds — running, walking, cross-training, etc.  Figure out which styles you need.   I narrowed my running shoe search on Shopping.com by the “Most Popular” and found the Gel Kayano Xi Athletic Shoes Asics for both men and women.

When working out, I find it’s easy to pass the time while listening to music.  If your MP3 player has been getting in the way, you may want to buy gadget-friendly workout wear to make your experience even more rockin’.  Check out iPod-compatible clothing such as Hammacher Schlemmer’s Technology-Enabled T-Shirt.

If you’re a sports fan, add an extra pep to your step by supporting your favorite team.  You never know, you could meet some rivals to keep your adrenaline pumping or other fans from your hometown.  And ladies, you don’t have to wear a boxy jersey, you can find cute sports-inspired clothing like this St. Louis Cardinals spaghetti strap tank top.  Go Cards!

The key is to be comfortable while you’re working out and if you can look great at the same time it’s icing.  After all, after your workout, you’ll deserve a treat.  So enjoy!

Gold Standard

“Yellow colored objects appear to be gold.”
Aristotle, 384 - 322 B.C.

Here’s a fun exercise: Gold is going for $673.40 a troy ounce, which works out to $9,818.17 per pound. Multiply that by your weight and you’ll know exactly how much you’re worth in this spring trend.

Solid GoldSteppin’ Out

Who needs roads paved in gold when you have gold heels? Create your own good luck and wear them with everything from jeans to suits.

Brilliance in a ClutchCoin Purse

Flaunt your wealth (even if it’s mostly knowledge) with a gold purse. Anything you put in it (breath mints, bobby pins, etc.) will feel a luxury commodity.

Outshine the RainRain Maker

Every storm cloud will have a golden lining with a metallic rain coat. I’ll understand if you do a rain dance or two.

Shoe Ins

“Give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world.”
Bette Midler, b. 1945

It seems like everyday someone else announces they’re running for president. (I’m not, just so you know.) With elections in the air, it’s hardly a coincidence that platforms are a hot issue for spring. Now that the political is personal style, it’s time to start developing your platform. So pick your battles and stand your ground in the shoe of the season.

Donald J Pliner Cosette SandalGrassroots
If you’re new to the game you might want to start small. A low platform sandal is the perfect entry shoe. It’s shorter than a soapbox (and Barbara Boxer’s stepstool), but still indicates you’re up on current affairs.

Cole Haan Dania Air SlingRunning Mate
A new trend in the shoe biz is for luxury brands to partner with sneaker brands to make comfy shoes. (Why the luxury brands can’t figure out comfy shoes on their own I don’t know- apparently it takes a committee to raise a shoe.) A great choice for a long day of campaigning, fielding questions and dodging paperwork.

MICHAEL Michael Kors Shelby Slingback SandalVictory Party
Even if your office isn’t oval, getting to it requires diplomacy, strategy and perseverance. Successfully navigating traffic or public transportation, under-construction city streets and internal hierarchy is quite an accomplishment. So shake hands, kiss babies and stand tall in the latte line in a pair of sky high platform heels.

Spring Into Style

This morning, Constance White, eBay’s Style Director, appeared on television shows across the country.  The topic: spring fashion trends.

According to Constance, the key items women should invest in are a trench coat, a metallic handbag, a pair of Lucite platform shoes, teardrop earrings and a versatile spring dress.

blue-trench.jpgNine West Metallic BagLucite Shoe

According to Constance, this spring, the hot trends include:

A light color palette with several bright, bold colors

As dictated by the top designer lines, the color palette for spring is light and bright with some key pale neutrals like white, silver, gray, off-white and yellow. We’ll also see some knock-em-dead bold brights such as true purple, fuschia, orange and kelly green.

Metallic bags and clutch purses

Metallic bags in various styles will be everywhere, from high-end lines like Chloe, but also from more affordable, everyday brands like Nine West. Clutch purses are trendy this season, in styles that can easily go from day to evening.

Cropped jackets and trench coats

Every spring light coats are key, but this year we’ll see more fashionable takes on the traditional trench coat. Designers have created trenches in beautiful hues and also bold, nature-inspired prints such as leaves, flowers, insects and animals!

Platform shoes and flats

Affordable shoes abound this season with platforms in heels and wedges, and particularly in patent leather or with a Lucite heel. Dainty flats are also a hot look as they go well with most outfits and can be found in a ballerina style or a dressier, open-toed style in this spring’s colors, metallics or nature-inspired prints.

Drop earrings and hair combs

Feminine accessories set the stage for glamour with hair combs and brooches with bright flowers, jewels and other natural elements such as colorful insects.

Strapless tent and trapeze dresses

Dresses add a touch of sophistication to any outfit, whether for work, leisure or socializing. Mix and match accessories and shoes to take the same dress from work to play. Casual, yet elegant dresses in strapless or trapeze styles keep a feminine silhouette without hugging too much skin.

Tailored shorts

Shorts and pants will take on a very tailored and fitted look this season with dressy trouser shorts in a Bermuda length that can be worn to the office, to cropped cigarette-inspired pants for a classic put-together ensemble.

What’s going out of style?  Constance said peasant skirts, chandelier earrings, bangle bracelets and pointy shoes.

Stay tuned for our top product picks in each category.  In the meantime, feel free to share your favorites.
